چکیده

1 This paper aims to compare household waste, separated pig solids, food waste, pig slaughterhouse sludge 2 and green algae regarding their biodegradability, their stabilization kinetics and their temperature rise during 3 composting. Three experiments in lab-scale pilots (300L) were performed for each waste, each one under a 4 constant aeration rate. The aeration rates applied were comprised between 100 and 1100 L/h. The 5 biodegradability of waste was expressed as function of dry matter, organic matter, total carbon and chemical 6 oxygen demand removed, on one hand, and of total oxygen consumption and carbon dioxide production on the 7 other. These different variables were found closely correlated. Time required for stabilization of each waste was 8 determined too. A method to calculate the duration of stabilization in case of limiting oxygen supply was 9 proposed. Carbon and chemical oxygen demand mass balances were established and gaseous emissions as 10 carbon dioxide and methane were given. Finally, the temperature rise was shown to be proportional to the total 11 mass of material biodegraded during composting.

Ammonia emissions from the composting of different organic wastes. Dependency on process temperature.

UNLABELLED Ammonia emissions were quantified for the laboratory-scale composting of three typical organic wastes with medium nitrogen content: organic fraction of municipal solid wastes, raw sludge and anaerobically digested sludge; and the composting of two wastes with high nitrogen content: animal by-products from slaughterhouses and partially hydrolysed hair from the leather industry. All th...

Use of Fenton reaction for the treatment of leachate from composting of different wastes.

The oxidation of leachate coming from the composting of two organic wastes (wastewater sludge and organic fraction of municipal solid wastes) using the Fenton's reagent was studied using different ratios [Fe(2+)]/[COD](0) and maintaining a ratio [H(2)O(2)]/[COD](0) equal to 1. The optimal conditions for Fenton reaction were found at a ratio [Fe(2+)]/[COD](0) equal to 0.1. Both leachates were si...

Comparison of aerobic and anaerobic stability indices through a MSW biological treatment process.

A complex mechanical-biological waste treatment plant designed for the processing of mixed municipal solid wastes (MSW) and source-selected organic fraction of municipal solid wastes (OFMSW) has been studied by using stability indices related to aerobic (respiration index, RI) and anaerobic conditions (biochemical methane potential, BMP). Several selected stages of the plant have been character...

Chemical, Thermal and Spectroscopic Methods to Assess Biodegradation of Winery-Distillery Wastes during Composting

The objective of this work was to study the co-composting process of wastes from the winery and distillery industry with animal manures, using the classical chemical methods traditionally used in composting studies together with advanced instrumental methods (thermal analysis, FT-IR and CPMAS 13C NMR techniques), to evaluate the development of the process and the quality of the end-products obt...
